# SSC JE 2026 Vacancy: 1,699 Tentative Posts, Department-wise and Category-wise List

SSC's tentative vacancy list of 8 October 2026 for the Junior Engineer Examination, 2026 shows 1,699 posts, down from 1,748 in the notice: 867 JE (Civil), 462 Scientific Assistant (IMD), 183 JE (E&M), 108 JE (Electrical), 69 JE (Telecom) and 10 JE (Mechanical). Paper-I is proposed for 2 to 6 November 2026.

The Staff Selection Commission (SSC) uploaded the tentative vacancy list for the **Junior Engineer Examination, 2026** on 8 October 2026. It shows **1,699 vacancies** in 20 department-and-post rows. That is 49 fewer than the 1,748 tentative vacancies given in the exam notice of 2 September 2026. The list does not give a reason for the change.

The numbers are still tentative. The notice says SSC will put the post-wise and category-wise tentative or final vacancies on its website, so they can change again. Paper-I is proposed for **2 to 6 November 2026**.

Adding up each department's rows, the largest employers are IMD (462), CPWD (446: 343 Civil and 103 Electrical), MES (315: 154 Civil and 161 Electrical & Mechanical) and the Border Roads Organisation (293: 271 Civil and 22 Electrical & Mechanical).

## Vacancies for persons with benchmark disabilities

SSC's list also has four disability columns: OH, HH (hard of hearing), VH (visually handicapped) and Others. Their totals are OH 32, HH 14, VH 1 and Others 13, which add up to 60. They are not extra posts on top of 1,699: each row's total is only the sum of its SC, ST, OBC, EWS and UR columns. Rows with at least one such post:

| Department | Post | OH | HH | VH | Others |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Central Water Commission | JE (Mechanical) | 1 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Central Water Commission | JE (Civil) | 2 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Central Public Works Department | JE (Electrical) | 1 | 1 | 0 | 2 |
| Central Public Works Department | JE (Civil) | 4 | 5 | 0 | 4 |
| Farakka Barrage Project | JE (Civil) | 0 | 0 | 0 | 1 |
| Military Engineer Services (MES) | JE (Civil) | 2 | 3 | 0 | 1 |
| Military Engineer Services (MES) | JE (Electrical & Mechanical) | 2 | 3 | 0 | 2 |
| Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships | JE (Civil) | 0 | 1 | 0 | 0 |
| Department of Telecommunication | JE (Telecom) | 1 | 0 | 1 | 1 |
| India Meteorological Department | Scientific Assistant | 18 | 0 | 0 | 0 |
| Brahmaputra Board | JE (Civil) | 1 | 1 | 0 | 1 |
| **Total** | | **32** | **14** | **1** | **13** |

The only VH post is in the Department of Telecommunication. This matches the notice, which says the JE and Scientific Assistant posts are not identified as suitable for visually handicapped candidates, except JE (Telecom) in the Department of Telecommunication. The Border Roads Organisation rows have no disability posts: para 5.1 of the notice, which lists the disabilities the JE posts are suitable for, begins with “Except for the Border Roads Organization (BRO)”.

## What changed from the notice

- The total fell from 1,748 to 1,699.
- The notice's post table (para 2) includes JE (Civil) in the National Technical Research Organisation (NTRO) and JE (Electrical) in the Farakka Barrage Project. The 8 October list has no row for either. Farakka Barrage Project appears only with 2 JE (Civil) posts.
- There is no ex-servicemen column. The notice (para 4.3) says there is no reservation for ex-servicemen because these are Group ‘B’ posts, though ex-servicemen still get age relaxation.

The notice (paras 4.1 and 4.2) says the vacancies, and how they are split between categories, are reported by the departments, and that SSC has no role in deciding the number of vacancies. The notice also says SSC does not collect state-wise or zone-wise vacancies. If you want those, the notice tells you to ask the department concerned.

## What the list means for your application

- **Each post has its own merit list.** SSC draws separate merit lists for JE (Civil), JE (Electrical & Mechanical), Scientific Assistant in IMD and JE (Telecom) to shortlist candidates for Paper-II (notice para 18.3).
- **Some posts overlap.** The notice (page 4, Notes 1 to 4) says candidates for JE (Mechanical) are also eligible for JE (Electrical & Mechanical); candidates for JE (Telecom) are also eligible for Scientific Assistant in IMD or JE (Electrical) if they hold the required qualification; JE (Electrical) candidates are also eligible for JE (Telecom), subject to qualification, and for JE (Electrical & Mechanical); and Scientific Assistant candidates are also eligible for JE (Telecom), subject to qualification.
- **Department preference comes later, and it is final.** SSC will take your preference of posts and departments through an online option form on its website before it declares the result of the First Round of Tentative Allocation (FRTA). You will not be considered for a post or department you do not choose, choices cannot be changed later, and if you miss the window you will not be considered for any post (para 17).
- **BRO posts (293: 271 Civil and 22 Electrical & Mechanical) are for men only and need a physical test.** After the final result, BRO checks its own physical efficiency test (a one-mile run in 10 minutes at the GREF Centre, Pune), physical standards (height, chest and weight by region) and medical standards. The notice warns that if you fail them, you may not be considered for any other post, and it advises you to read these standards before giving your preferences (para 17.5 and [Annexure-XVI of the notice](https://aijobalert.com/documents/ssc/notice-of-adv-je-2026-3efcdd94.pdf)).
- **Age limit differs by department.** It is up to 32 years for CPWD and the Directorate General of Lighthouses and Lightships, and up to 30 years for the other departments, counted on 1 August 2026. All posts are Group ‘B’, Level-6 (₹35,400 to ₹1,12,400).
- **Scientific Assistant qualification.** SSC revised the essential qualification for Scientific Assistant in IMD by [an addendum dated 10 September 2026](https://aijobalert.com/documents/ssc/addendum-je-10092026-8c43b031.pdf). If you applied for the 462 IMD posts, read it.

## Exam dates and what comes next
