## Category Wise Vacancies by Unit

Category-wise vacancies in each unit (detailed advertisement, page 2, and the [unit-wise break-up of vacancies](https://aijobalert.com/documents/bhel/bhel-artisan-2027-unit-wise-vacancies-4873a962.pdf)). PwD and Ex-Servicemen (ExSM) are shown in separate columns, as printed. The advertisement gives no all-unit total per category; the last row is our sum of the nine unit rows.

| Unit | UR | EWS | OBC | SC | ST | Total | PwD | ExSM |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| BAP | 32 | 8 | 20 | 14 | 1 | **75** | 4 | 10 |
| HPVP | 47 | 12 | 32 | 20 | 9 | **120** | 5 | 16 |
| EDN | 19 | 4 | 12 | 7 | 3 | **45** | 2 | 6 |
| SBD | 14 | 2 | 8 | 4 | 2 | **30** | 2 | 4 |
| HEEP | 35 | 6 | 8 | 11 | 0 | **60** | 2 | 8 |
| HPEP | 25 | 6 | 16 | 9 | 4 | **60** | 16 | 9 |
| HEP | 24 | 6 | 9 | 9 | 12 | **60** | 5 | 8 |
| TP | 24 | 6 | 17 | 13 | 0 | **60** | 3 | 8 |
| HPBP | 65 | 15 | 40 | 28 | 2 | **150** | 6 | 21 |
| **Total (our sum)** | **285** | **65** | **162** | **115** | **33** | **660** | **45** | **90** |

Category age relaxation applies only in trades where vacancies are reserved for that category in your unit. BHEL's FAQs say that where your trade is not reserved for your category in that unit, you may apply under UR, but without the category's age relaxation. If you do not have a caste certificate, you may apply as General (if eligible); your candidature is then considered as General and the category cannot be changed later. The break-up PDF shows the category split for each trade in each unit. Persons with benchmark disabilities (at least 40%): the post is identified for OH (BL or OL; BL only for Electrician or Fitter), leprosy cured, dwarfism and acid attack victims, VH (low vision), HH (deaf and hard of hearing, speech and language disability) and multiple disabilities. It is not identified as suitable for blindness. A scribe is available for persons with benchmark locomotor disability and other identified benchmark disabilities who produce the original medical certificate and the physical limitation certificate (format on careers.bhel.in), issued by a competent medical authority, when entering the exam centre.

## BHEL Artisan Exam Pattern and Cut-off Marks

The [BHEL Artisan exam pattern](https://aijobalert.com/documents/bhel/bhel-artisan-exam-pattern-075a345f.pdf) for the Computer Based Examination (CBE):

| Part | Questions |
| --- | --- |
| Questions on Trade | 70 |
| Questions on Engineering / Calculations | 30 |
| Test of Reasoning | 20 |
| **Total** | **120** |

- 120 objective multiple-choice questions with four options; duration 90 minutes.
- One mark for each correct answer; 1/4 mark deducted for each wrong answer.
- Questions are trilingual: Hindi, English and a third language of your choice (Kannada, Telugu or Tamil). If the English and Hindi versions differ, the English version is treated as authentic.
- Calculators, slide rules, smart phones, smart watches and any study material are not allowed; using them leads to disqualification from the exam hall.
- Minimum qualifying marks: 40% for UR/EWS and 30% for OBC (NCL)/SC/ST. For PwD and Ex-Servicemen, the cut-off can be relaxed down to 30% (UR/EWS) and 22.5% (OBC/SC/ST).
- Shortlisting for the Skill Test is in the ratio 1:3 to the vacancies in your trade and category in your unit; for a single vacancy, at most 5 candidates are shortlisted.

## Age Limit and Relaxation

Upper age limit as on 1 October 2026: **27 years for General and EWS**. General candidates who do not claim any relaxation and were born before 1 October 1999 are not eligible. Relaxations:

| Category | Relaxation |
| --- | --- |
| SC / ST | 5 years (up to 32) |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years (up to 30) |
| Persons with Disabilities | 10 years (General), 13 years (OBC-NCL), 15 years (SC/ST) |
| Ex-Servicemen | As per Government rules |
| Domiciled in Jammu & Kashmir from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1989 | 5 years |
| Relevant work experience (minimum 6 months) | Up to 7 years, with the experience certificate in the [prescribed format](https://aijobalert.com/documents/bhel/bhel-artisan-experience-certificate-format-3b9145ee.pdf) |
| Dependents of deceased BHEL employees (compassionate) | Up to 5 years |

With all relaxations together, your age cannot be more than 56 years as on 1 October 2026.

## Compassionate Consideration

As per the [Compassionate Consideration notice](https://aijobalert.com/documents/bhel/bhel-artisan-2027-compassionate-consideration-aa65192d.pdf), up to 15% of the vacancies are earmarked for dependents (spouse and children) of BHEL employees who died while in service. They can apply under this category only if neither they nor the other dependents are employed in a Government, semi-government or autonomous body, a PSU or an organisation listed on a stock exchange. If the details given are incorrect or a dependent is employed elsewhere, the candidature is not considered under this category and is shifted to the open category. They apply online, pay the fee and take the CBE like other candidates, give the deceased employee's details in the form, and get up to 5 years of age relaxation. Their CBE cut-off is lower by 10% of the normal cut-off for Gen/EWS/OBC and by 15% for SC/ST. Unfilled vacancies are shifted to open vacancies.

## Rules to Know Before You Apply

- **One unit, one trade:** the advertisement permits one manufacturing unit and one trade only, and the CBE for all units and trades is on the same day, so choose carefully. If one applicant submits more than one online application, the advertisement treats only the last submitted one as final. BHEL's FAQs add that if you still apply for two different trades or two different units, admit cards are issued for both, but the CBE for both is on the same day, and your candidature is then considered on merit and your performance in the CBE you choose to appear in.
- **Minimum marks exceptions:** SC, ST and PwBD candidates applying against a post not reserved for their category are considered under the general standard, with no relaxation in the minimum percentage of marks. Ex-Servicemen claiming trade equivalency from an Army, Air Force or Naval Institute certificate do not need the minimum marks (they produce the equivalence certificate).
- **20-year posting:** you must serve at your allotted unit for at least 20 years from joining; no transfer request is entertained in that period. A later request to move back to a unit of your preference can be considered only if a suitable position is available, and only on reversion to the original post.
- **Full-time courses only.** ITI/NAC certificates and marksheets must be issued up to 1 October 2026. Diploma holders and candidates with higher qualifications are not eligible.
- **BHEL temporaries:** candidates already selected or engaged at BHEL as temporary employees, or on probation and not yet regularised, cannot apply.
- **Certificates:** OBC (NCL) certificate issued on or after 1 January 2026; EWS certificate valid for 2026-27 (based on 2025-26 income and assets); PwD certificate in the 2017 prescribed format. If you cannot produce the PwD or OBC (NCL) certificate in the prescribed format, your candidature is not considered; without the EWS Income & Asset Certificate at Document Verification, you are not allowed to take the Skill Test. Ex-Servicemen who already got a regular Group C civil job under the Government using Ex-Servicemen reservation are not eligible for reservation in the Ex-Servicemen category. Employed candidates apply through proper channel or bring a No Objection Certificate to document verification.
- **Medical:** a medical examination before joining, with no relaxation in health standards. Under the [BHEL medical examination rules](https://aijobalert.com/documents/bhel/bhel-medical-examination-rules-f976d8dc.pdf), colour vision deficiency disqualifies Electricians. The rules also set eyesight, chest measurement and other health standards; read them before you apply.
- **Best / Runner-up Apprentice:** those selected at the All India Skill Competitions of DGE&T must upload the Certificate of Merit. They also take the CBE and are called for the Skill Test subject to the other terms and eligibility conditions. If selected, the Best Apprentice joins with 2 increments and the Runner-up at the minimum of the scale.
- **Exam city and answer key:** you choose up to 5 test centres, but BHEL may add or cancel a city or centre depending on the number of candidates. The exam city is informed around 7 days before the CBE. An objection window opens up to 5 days after the CBE, where you can see the question set, answer key and your options. No travel allowance is paid for the CBE; Skill Test candidates get second sleeper train fare as per rules, but anyone found at that stage not to meet an eligibility condition is neither allowed into the Document Verification / Skill Test nor paid travel allowance.
- **Provisional candidature:** your candidature is provisional at every stage, and a roll number or Skill Test call letter does not mean BHEL has cleared it. If you are found ineligible, or to have given false information or hidden a material fact, it can be rejected at any stage, and if it is found even after appointment, your services are liable to action including termination and prosecution. BHEL may cancel, restrict, enlarge or reopen the recruitment without notice.
