This lecture covers the foundational concepts of set theory for Class 11 Mathematics, including set definitions, representation methods, and standard classifications. It details subsets, power sets, intervals, Venn diagrams, algebraic laws, and cardinal number formulas, illustrated with solved problems and algebraic proofs.

Introduction to Sets and Representation Forms

A set is defined as a well-defined collection of objects or elements, meaning it does not change based on personal opinion or vague criteria.
Everyday objects, whether living or non-living, are considered elements or members of a set when collected under a definite rule.
Must knowSets are denoted by capital letters, and their elements are enclosed within curly brackets and separated by commas.
In roster or tabular form, each element of the set is explicitly listed inside braces; the order of elements is irrelevant and repetitions are ignored.
In set-builder form, elements are described through a common characteristic property using the notation {x : x satisfies property P}.

Types of Sets: Empty, Singleton, Finite, and Infinite

Must knowAn empty set (also called a null or void set) contains no elements at all and is denoted by the Greek symbol phi or empty curly brackets {}.
A singleton set contains exactly one element, such as {x : x = 2x + 2}, which simplifies to {-2}.
A set is finite if it contains a countable number of elements, and the count of distinct elements in a finite set A is its cardinal number, written as n(A).
Standard infinite sets of numbers are denoted by specific letters: N for natural numbers, Z for integers, Q for rational numbers, and R for real numbers.
Equal sets have identical elements regardless of order, while equivalent sets have the same cardinal number (n(A) = n(B)).
Must knowAll equal sets are equivalent, but equivalent sets need not be equal.

Subsets, Power Sets, and Intervals

Set A is a subset of set B (written as A ⊆ B) if every element of set A is also an element of set B.
Must knowEvery set is a subset of itself, and the empty set (phi) is a subset of every set.
A proper subset contains elements of the set but cannot be equal to the original set itself.
For a finite set containing n elements, the total number of subsets is 2ⁿ, and the total number of proper subsets is 2ⁿ - 1.
The power set of A, denoted P(A), is the set of all subsets of A, which means n(P(A)) = 2ⁿ.
A closed interval [a, b] includes the boundary points a and b, whereas an open interval (a, b) includes all real numbers strictly between a and b, excluding the endpoints.

Universal Sets, Operations on Sets, and Venn Diagrams

A universal set (denoted by U) contains all objects or elements under consideration for a specific problem or context.
Must knowIn Venn diagrams, the universal set is typically represented by a rectangle, while its subsets are represented by circles within the rectangle.
The union of two sets (A ∪ B) is the set of all elements belonging to set A, set B, or both.
The intersection of two sets (A ∩ B) is the set of elements common to both set A and set B.
Two sets A and B are disjoint if they have no common elements, which is formally written as A ∩ B = phi.
The difference of sets, A - B, consists of all elements that belong to A but not to B, which can also be expressed as A ∩ B'.
The symmetric difference of sets A and B (A Δ B) is defined as (A - B) ∪ (B - A).
The complement of set A (denoted A' or A^c) consists of all elements in the universal set U that do not belong to A (U - A).

Laws of Set Algebra and Cardinality Formulas

The idempotent laws state that A ∪ A = A and A ∩ A = A.
The identity laws establish that A ∪ phi = A, A ∩ U = A, phi' = U, and U' = phi.
Must knowDe Morgan's laws state that (A ∪ B)' = A' ∩ B' and (A ∩ B)' = A' ∪ B'.
The distributive laws state that A ∩ (B ∪ C) = (A ∩ B) ∪ (A ∩ C) and A ∪ (B ∩ C) = (A ∪ B) ∩ (A ∪ C).
Must knowThe fundamental cardinality formula for two finite sets is n(A ∪ B) = n(A) + n(B) - n(A ∩ B).
For disjoint sets A and B where n(A ∩ B) = 0, the union formula simplifies to n(A ∪ B) = n(A) + n(B).
The number of elements belonging strictly to A and not B is calculated by n(A - B) = n(A) - n(A ∩ B).

Methods of Set Proofs

To prove that two sets A and B are equal (A = B), one must demonstrate mutual inclusion: A ⊆ B and B ⊆ A.
To prove A ⊆ B algebraically, assume an arbitrary element x ∈ A, apply relevant definitions and logical steps, and deduce that x ∈ B.
A minus operation can always be converted to an intersection with a complement: A - B = A ∩ B'.
In algebraic proofs involving operations, expressions like (A ∩ B') ∪ B simplify by the distributive law to (A ∪ B) ∩ (B' ∪ B), which reduces to (A ∪ B) ∩ U = A ∪ B.

Key terms

Set: A well-defined collection of distinct objects or elements
Cardinal Number: The total count of distinct elements in a finite set, denoted n(A)
Null Set: A set containing no elements, denoted by phi or {}
Power Set: The set containing all possible subsets of a given set, denoted P(A)
Disjoint Sets: Two sets whose intersection is the empty set (A ∩ B = phi)
Universal Set: A set containing all possible elements under consideration in a given context
Complement of a Set: The set of all elements in the universal set that do not belong to the given set (A' = U - A)

Formulas

Total subsets of a set with n elements = 2ⁿ: Used to count all possible subsets
Total proper subsets of a set with n elements = 2ⁿ - 1: Used to count subsets excluding the set itself
n(A ∪ B) = n(A) + n(B) - n(A ∩ B): Used to find the number of elements in the union of two sets
n(A - B) = n(A) - n(A ∩ B): Used to calculate the count of elements belonging only to set A
A - B = A ∩ B': Used in algebraic proofs to replace set difference with intersection and complement
(A ∪ B)' = A' ∩ B': De Morgan's Law for the complement of a union
(A ∩ B)' = A' ∪ B': De Morgan's Law for the complement of an intersection

Exam tips

Never confuse the symbol phi with {phi}; phi represents the empty set with 0 elements, whereas {phi} is a singleton set containing one element (the empty set).
When converting A - B into algebraic proofs, immediately rewrite it as A ∩ B' to apply distributive laws and De Morgan's laws easily.

Quick revision

A set is a well-defined collection where inclusion does not change from person to person.
Repetition and order of elements do not alter a set in roster form.
The empty set phi is a subset of every set.
Every set is a subset of itself.
A set with n elements has 2ⁿ subsets and 2ⁿ - 1 proper subsets.
The power set of an empty set, P(phi), contains exactly 1 element: {phi}.
Two finite sets are equivalent if and only if their cardinal numbers are equal.
The complement of the universal set is the empty set, and the complement of the empty set is the universal set.
The double complement of any set returns the set itself: (A')' = A.
Two sets A and B are disjoint when their intersection is empty: A ∩ B = phi.
