Image Compressor: JPG, PNG, WebP & SVG
Make your images smaller without making them look worse. Drop up to 20 JPG, PNG, WebP or SVG files: each one is compressed as far as it can go while it still looks the same, and you can compare it with the original before you download. Everything runs in your browser, so your images never leave your device.
How to compress an image
- Drop your images into the box above, tap Choose images, or paste one with Ctrl+V. You can add up to 20 at a time, in any mix of formats.
- Leave Compression on Best quality for the smallest file that still looks the same. Pick Lossless if no pixel may change, or Smallest file if size matters more than fine detail.
- Each image shows its old size, new size and how much was saved. Tap Compare and drag the slider to check the result against the original.
- Tap Download next to an image, or Download all as ZIP to save the whole batch in one file.
How quality is protected
Most compressors use one fixed quality for every image, so a detailed photo comes out blotchy and a simple one stays bigger than it needs to be. This tool tries several settings for each image and measures the result against the original with SSIM, the structural similarity score image engineers use. It keeps the smallest version that still scores as identical, both on average and in the most detailed corner of the picture, such as a face or a line of text. If nothing smaller passes, you are told to keep your original.
Which compression level should you choose?
| Level | What happens | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Lossless | The picture is unchanged. JPG and WebP keep their exact pixels; PNGs are repacked tighter (see-through edges may round by 1 shade in 255, which no screen shows). Camera data and editor junk are removed. | Logos, screenshots with text, files you will edit again |
| Best quality | Compressed until just before any change would show. Each image gets its own setting. | Photos, website and blog images, sharing on WhatsApp or email |
| Smallest file | Squeezed harder. Fine detail may soften slightly when you zoom right in. | Thumbnails, previews, uploads with a strict size limit |
What happens to each format
| Format | How it is compressed | You get |
|---|---|---|
| JPG / JPEG | Saved again at the lowest quality that still matches the original, found separately for every photo. Camera and location data removed. | JPG |
| PNG | Colours reduced to 256 or fewer when the picture still looks the same, otherwise repacked losslessly. Transparency kept. | PNG |
| WebP | Same quality check as JPG. Animated WebP keeps every frame; only hidden data is removed. | WebP |
| SVG | Comments, editor data, extra spaces and over-long numbers removed. Both versions are drawn and compared before you get the file. | SVG |
| GIF, BMP | Graphics and see-through images become PNG, photos become JPG. Animated GIFs are left as they are. | PNG or JPG |
| AVIF | Already one of the smallest formats. It becomes a JPG only if that is smaller, otherwise you keep the original. | JPG or original |
Private by design
Most online compressors upload your files to their server. This one doesn’t: your browser does all the work, so your photos, ID scans and documents stay on your device and nothing is stored. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.
Frequently asked questions
How do I compress an image without losing quality?
Leave Compression on Best quality. Every image is checked against the original and only shrunk as far as it still looks the same. If you want the picture left completely unchanged, choose Lossless.
Are my images uploaded to a server?
No. Compression runs inside your browser on your own phone or computer. Your images are never sent anywhere and are gone when you close the page.
Is this image compressor free?
Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Compress as many batches as you like.
How do I compress a photo to 20 KB or 50 KB for a job form?
This tool makes a file as small as it can without visible loss, but it does not aim at an exact KB figure. For a government form that asks for, say, 20–50 KB and a set pixel size, use our free Photo & Signature Resizer instead.
How do I compress a PNG file?
Drop it in. If the PNG has 256 colours or fewer it is repacked losslessly; otherwise its colours are reduced when the picture still looks the same. Transparent backgrounds stay transparent.
How do I compress an SVG file?
Drop the .svg in. The optimiser removes comments, editor data, extra spaces and over-long numbers, then draws your original and the result and compares them pixel by pixel. If they differ, it uses a gentler setting.
Does compressing reduce the image resolution?
No. Width and height stay the same unless you choose a size in the Resize menu. Resizing never makes an image larger.
Will the format of my image change?
JPG stays JPG, PNG stays PNG, WebP stays WebP and SVG stays SVG. Only GIF, BMP and AVIF may become PNG or JPG, and the new name shows the change.
Is the location and camera data removed from my photo?
Yes. EXIF data such as GPS location, camera model and date is removed. The orientation is kept, so a phone photo still opens the right way up.
Why didn’t my image get smaller?
It was already compressed as far as it can go without losing quality. Rather than hand you a bigger or worse file, the tool tells you to keep your original. Try Smallest file or a smaller size in the Resize menu.
Can I compress many images at once?
Yes, up to 20 in one batch, each up to 25 MB, in any mix of formats. Download them one by one or all together as a ZIP.
Does it work on a phone?
Yes, in current versions of Chrome, Safari, Edge and Firefox on Android and iPhone. Safari cannot save WebP files, so on an iPhone a WebP only has its hidden data removed.
Need a photo or signature at an exact KB and pixel size for a government job form?
