Convert PNG to WebP online, up to 20 images at once. Transparent backgrounds stay transparent, you choose the quality, and every file shows how much smaller it got. The conversion runs in your browser, so your images never leave your device.

How to convert PNG to WebP

  1. Drop your PNG files into the box above, tap Choose PNG files, or paste an image with Ctrl+V. You can add up to 20 at a time.
  2. Each image converts on its own. The list shows the old size, the new size and how much smaller the WebP is.
  3. Move the WebP quality slider if you want. 80 is a good balance; lower gives a smaller file, higher gives a sharper image. Every file re-converts when you let go.
  4. Tap Download next to a file, or Download all to save every WebP in one go.

Why convert PNG to WebP?

  • Smaller files. Google measured lossless WebP at 26% smaller than the same image as PNG, and lossy WebP is usually smaller still.
  • Faster pages. Smaller images load sooner, which helps visitors on mobile data and counts towards page speed.
  • Transparency is kept. WebP stores the same see-through background a PNG has, in both lossy and lossless mode.
  • Works everywhere that matters. Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Safari and their mobile versions all display WebP.

What is a WebP file?

WebP is an image format made by Google for the web. It can compress an image lossy, like JPG, or lossless, like PNG, and it supports transparency and animation in one format. A .webp file opens in every current browser and in most image viewers.

What is a PNG file?

PNG is a lossless image format, so every pixel is kept exactly. That makes it good for screenshots, logos, text and images with transparent backgrounds, but the files are large. Converting a PNG to WebP keeps the look while cutting the size.

Private by design

Many online converters upload your files to their server. This one doesn’t: your browser does the conversion, so the images stay on your device and nothing is stored. It is free, with no sign-up and no watermark.

Frequently asked questions

Is this PNG to WebP converter free?

Yes. There is no sign-up, no watermark and no daily limit. Convert as many batches as you like.

Are my images uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion runs inside your browser. Your PNG files never leave your phone or computer, and they are gone when you close the page.

How many PNG files can I convert at once?

Up to 20 images in one batch, each up to 25 MB. Download or remove some to add more.

Will the transparent background of my PNG be kept?

Yes. WebP supports transparency, and the converter keeps it. The preview shows a checkered pattern where the image is see-through.

Can I convert PNG to WebP without losing quality?

Set the quality slider to 100. If your browser saves that file as lossless WebP, the list marks it Lossless and every pixel is kept. Otherwise it is the sharpest lossy WebP the browser can make.

Is WebP better than PNG?

For websites and sharing, usually yes: WebP gives the same look in a smaller file and keeps transparency. Keep PNG as the master copy for editing and printing, and where a site or form accepts only PNG or JPG.

Does converting PNG to WebP reduce quality?

At quality 100 in Chrome or Edge, no: the WebP is lossless, so it is pixel-for-pixel the same as your PNG. Below 100 the WebP is lossy. At 80 or above the difference is hard to see, and the file is much smaller.

Can I convert JPG to WebP with this tool?

Yes. It accepts JPG, GIF and BMP as well as PNG. A GIF converts its first frame only.

How do I open a WebP file?

Drag it into any current browser, such as Chrome, Edge, Firefox or Safari. Most up-to-date photo viewers on Windows, Mac and Android open WebP too.

Why is my WebP bigger than the PNG?

It can happen with small or very simple images, like a flat logo, or at quality 100. Lower the quality a little, or keep the original PNG. The list always shows whether the file got smaller or larger.

Does it work on iPhone or Safari?

Not yet. Safari, and every browser on iPhone, cannot create WebP files from a web page. Use Chrome, Edge or Firefox on a computer or an Android phone.

Can I upload a WebP photo to a government job application form?

Usually not. Most recruitment forms accept only JPG or JPEG for the photo and signature, so check the notification. To get the exact size a form asks for, use our free Photo & Signature Resizer.

Filling a government job form? Most accept only JPG photos and signatures within a set KB size.
