Course Administration and References

The primary textbook for the course is "Computer Networking: A Top-Down Approach" (8th edition, 2022) authored by Jim Kurose and Keith W Ross.
"Python Programming Cookbook" (2nd edition, 2023) by P. Kathiravelu and M. O. Faruque Sarker is recommended for socket programming exercises.
Reference books include "Computer Networks, A Systems Approach" (6th edition, 2021) by Larry Peterson and Bruce Davie, and "Unix Network Programming: The Sockets Networking API" (3rd edition, 2017) by W. Richard Stevens.
Must knowThe sockets networking reference by W. Richard Stevens uses the C programming language for its exercises.

Definition of Computer Network and Transfer Modes

A computer network is defined as an interconnection of computer systems to transfer data between the applications running on these systems.
Network communication takes place between specific applications running on computers rather than the bare computers themselves.
In serial transfer, data is transferred one bit at a time over a single communication link between two computers.
In parallel transfer, multiple parallel links are used to transmit multiple bits simultaneously in one go.
Must knowComputer networks transfer data fundamentally in a serial fashion, but they can simulate parallel communication using coding techniques.
Serial | Single link | One bit at a time
Parallel | Multiple parallel links | Multiple bits simultaneously

Why Study Networking

Common networking applications include web browsing, email transfer, video conferencing, audio calls (VoIP), and remote desktop connections.
Modern networks connect diverse smart devices including CCTV cameras, IoT devices like Amazon Echo, connected refrigerators, and washing machines.
Vehicular networks exchange data between moving vehicles and roadside units (RSUs) to process transportation data.
Voice over IP (VoIP) applications impose strict delay constraints, requiring data to reach within a specified duration for smooth conversation.
Must knowStudying networking helps engineers understand unique application challenges and design network mechanisms to satisfy application requirements.

How Computer Networks Look: Physical and Logical Views

The physical view of a computer network comprises physical networking equipment such as switches and the physical wires plugged into their ports.
Switches connect to personal computers, laptops, and other network switches using physical wiring.
In the logical view, end hosts connect through local networks (home Wi-Fi modems, campus LANs, or mobile cellular towers) to Internet Service Providers (ISPs).
Data centers host centralized application servers such as web servers and video servers.
Intermediate networking devices called routers forward data packets at high speeds across interconnected ISPs.
Must knowThe overall Internet is logically structured as a network of interconnected ISPs and local networks transferring data through routers.

Historical Developments: ARPANET and Early Networks

The Advanced Research Projects Agency (ARPA), funded by the United States Department of Defense, initiated computer networking research in 1959.
Theoretical research and prototype development took place from 1960 to 1966, leading to a formal proposal for ARPANET in 1966.
The firm Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN) was tasked in 1968 to design the interface processors and hardware components for ARPANET.
The first ARPANET connection was established on October 29, 1969, between UCLA and Stanford Research Institute (SRI).
The first message attempted to be transmitted over ARPANET was "login".
By late 1969, four nodes were connected to ARPANET: UCLA, Stanford Research Institute (SRI), UC Santa Barbara (UCSB), and University of Utah.
Must knowARPANET achieved its first international connections in 1973 by linking nodes in Norway and the United Kingdom.
October 29, 1969 | UCLA | Los Angeles, CA | First ARPANET node
Early November 1969 | SRI Stanford Research Institute | Menlo Park, CA | Second node
Late November 1969 | UC Santa Barbara (UCSB) | Santa Barbara, CA | Third node
December 1969 | University of Utah | Salt Lake City, UT | Fourth node

Emergence of Proprietary Networks

Following ARPANET's proof of concept, commercial vendors developed proprietary networking stacks.
IBM launched Systems Network Architecture (SNA) in 1974.
Digital Equipment Corporation introduced DECnet in 1975.
BBN commercialized Telenet in 1975, and Xerox introduced Xerox Network Systems (XNS) in 1977.
BITNET ("Because It's Time Network") was developed in 1981.
Must knowEarly proprietary networks were closed architectures that only allowed communication between devices running the same proprietary network stack.
1974 | SNA | IBM
1975 | DECnet | Digital Equipment Corporation
1975 | Telenet | Bolt Beranek and Newman (BBN)
1977 | XNS | Xerox
1981 | BITNET | Because It's Time Network

Key terms

Computer Network: An interconnection of computer systems enabling data transfer between running applications.
Serial Transfer: Transmission of data sequentially, one bit at a time, across a single channel or link.
Parallel Transfer: Simultaneous transmission of multiple bits across multiple parallel channels or links.
Router: A specialized intermediate networking device designed to forward data packets between different networks at high speeds.
ARPANET: Advanced Research Projects Agency Network, the pioneering packet-switching network funded by the US Department of Defense.

Quick revision

Read these the night before the exam.

A network technically connects applications running on computers, not just the physical hardware.
Modern computer networks transmit data serially and use coding schemes to achieve high throughput.
Routers form the logical core of the Internet, forwarding packets between different ISPs.
ARPA funded initial research into computer networking starting in the year 1959.
The first operational ARPANET link connected UCLA and SRI on October 29, 1969.
The first four ARPANET nodes were UCLA, SRI, UCSB, and the University of Utah by December 1969.
The very first text message sent across the ARPANET link was "login".
ARPANET established its first international links in 1973 with Norway and the United Kingdom.
IBM introduced Systems Network Architecture (SNA) in 1974.
