Category age relaxation applies only in trades where vacancies are reserved for that category in your unit. BHEL's FAQs say that where your trade is not reserved for your category in that unit, you may apply under UR, but without the category's age relaxation. If you do not have a caste certificate, you may apply as General (if eligible); your candidature is then considered as General and the category cannot be changed later. The break-up PDF shows the category split for each trade in each unit. Persons with benchmark disabilities (at least 40%): the post is identified for OH (BL or OL; BL only for Electrician or Fitter), leprosy cured, dwarfism and acid attack victims, VH (low vision), HH (deaf and hard of hearing, speech and language disability) and multiple disabilities. It is not identified as suitable for blindness. A scribe is available for persons with benchmark locomotor disability and other identified benchmark disabilities who produce the original medical certificate and the physical limitation certificate (format on careers.bhel.in), issued by a competent medical authority, when entering the exam centre.
The BHEL Artisan exam pattern for the Computer Based Examination (CBE):
| Part | Questions |
|---|---|
| Questions on Trade | 70 |
| Questions on Engineering / Calculations | 30 |
| Test of Reasoning | 20 |
| Total | 120 |
Upper age limit as on 1 October 2026: 27 years for General and EWS. General candidates who do not claim any relaxation and were born before 1 October 1999 are not eligible. Relaxations:
| Category | Relaxation |
|---|---|
| SC / ST | 5 years (up to 32) |
| OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) | 3 years (up to 30) |
| Persons with Disabilities | 10 years (General), 13 years (OBC-NCL), 15 years (SC/ST) |
| Ex-Servicemen | As per Government rules |
| Domiciled in Jammu & Kashmir from 1 January 1980 to 31 December 1989 | 5 years |
| Relevant work experience (minimum 6 months) | Up to 7 years, with the experience certificate in the prescribed format |
| Dependents of deceased BHEL employees (compassionate) | Up to 5 years |
With all relaxations together, your age cannot be more than 56 years as on 1 October 2026.
As per the Compassionate Consideration notice, up to 15% of the vacancies are earmarked for dependents (spouse and children) of BHEL employees who died while in service. They can apply under this category only if neither they nor the other dependents are employed in a Government, semi-government or autonomous body, a PSU or an organisation listed on a stock exchange. If the details given are incorrect or a dependent is employed elsewhere, the candidature is not considered under this category and is shifted to the open category. They apply online, pay the fee and take the CBE like other candidates, give the deceased employee's details in the form, and get up to 5 years of age relaxation. Their CBE cut-off is lower by 10% of the normal cut-off for Gen/EWS/OBC and by 15% for SC/ST. Unfilled vacancies are shifted to open vacancies.
18 November 2026, till 11:45 PM. Online applications open on 21 October 2026 at 10:00 AM at careers.bhel.in. BHEL says these dates are tentative and any change will be shown on its website.
660 posts of Artisan Grade IV: Fitter 278, Welder 104, Turner 52, Machinist 101, Electrician 90, Electronics Mechanic 23 and Foundryman 12, across nine BHEL units. Adding up the unit-wise tables, category-wise it is UR 285, EWS 65, OBC 162, SC 115, ST 33. The numbers are tentative.
Class 10 plus National Trade Certificate (NTC/ITI) plus National Apprenticeship Certificate (NAC) in the respective trade, with not less than 60% marks for Gen and OBC and 55% for SC and ST in both NTC/ITI and NAC, as on 1 October 2026. Only full-time regular courses count; diploma holders are not eligible. SC, ST and PwBD candidates applying against a post not reserved for their category are considered under the general standard, with no relaxation in the minimum percentage of marks. Ex-Servicemen claiming trade equivalency from an Army, Air Force or Naval Institute certificate do not need the minimum marks (they produce the equivalence certificate).
27 years for General and EWS as on 1 October 2026, with 3 years' relaxation for OBC (NCL), 5 years for SC/ST, 10/13/15 years for PwD, up to 7 years for relevant work experience and up to 5 years under compassionate consideration. The maximum with all relaxations is 56 years.
For the first year you work as a Temporary Artisan on consolidated wages of ₹24,000 per month. On successful completion of this temporary period you are regularised, as per BHEL's company rules, as Artisan Grade IV at the minimum of the ₹29,500–₹65,000 pay scale, with allowances.
120 objective questions in 90 minutes: 70 on the trade, 30 on engineering/calculations and 20 on reasoning. One mark per correct answer and 1/4 mark deducted per wrong answer. The paper is in Hindi, English and one of Kannada, Telugu or Tamil.
₹1,072 for UR/EWS/OBC (exam fee ₹600 + processing fee ₹400 + GST) and ₹472 for SC/ST/PwD/Ex-Servicemen (processing fee ₹400 + GST). It is non-refundable; bank charges may be extra.
BHEL's advertisement permits one manufacturing unit and one trade only, because the computer-based exam for all vacancies is on the same day, and it treats only your last submitted application as final if you submit more than one. BHEL's FAQs say that if you do apply for two different trades or two different units, admit cards are issued for both, but the CBE for both is on the same day, and your candidature is then considered on merit and your performance in the CBE you choose to appear in.
The computer-based exam is tentatively on 11 December 2026. The exam city is informed around 7 days before the exam.
