The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) has issued Examination Notice No. 02/2027-ENGG. for the Engineering Services Examination (ESE), 2027. It recruits Group ‘A’ engineers for services such as the Central Engineering Service, Indian Railway Management Service, Indian Defence Service of Engineers and Central Water Engineering Service, in four categories: Civil, Mechanical, Electrical and Electronics & Telecommunication.
UPSC expects to fill about 480 vacancies, including 19 for Persons with Benchmark Disabilities. The number may change.
The online form is open from 16 September to 6 October 2026 (6 PM) on upsconline.nic.in. The Preliminary exam is on 31 January 2027 and the Main exam on 18 June 2027.

Stage-I: Preliminary (objective)
Paper-I General Studies & Engineering Aptitude (200 marks, 2 hours) + Paper-II discipline paper (300 marks, 3 hours). 1/3 negative marking.
Stage-II: Main (conventional)
Two discipline papers of 300 marks each, 3 hours each. About 6–7 times the vacancies are admitted.
Stage-III: Personality Test
200 marks. About twice the vacancies are called.

Prelims + Mains + Personality Test marks (1,300 in total).

Prelims is objective with four options per question; one-third of the marks of a question is deducted for a wrong answer. Blank answers carry no penalty. Mains papers are answered in English.
